Deadline Shifted: International Students of Certain College Programs Lose PGWP Eligibility
✅On January 22, 2024, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced changes affecting Canada's international student program. Among them, graduates from college programs under public-private curriculum licensing agreements were declared ineligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) starting September 1, 2024. However, as of March 22, IRCC revised this deadline to May 15, 2024. This decision follows concerns over education quality and lack of oversight at these institutions, as highlighted by the Auditor General of Ontario. IRCC predicts a decline in international student enrollment due to the PGWP exclusion. Affected individuals may still qualify for alternative work permits. IRCC will collaborate with provinces to identify affected programs. This change is part of IRCC's effort to manage the International Student Program's growth. Additionally, modifications to PGWP criteria were introduced, including eligibility for three-year PGWPs for graduates of certain master's programs. A PGWP allows international student graduates to work in Canada, aiding in professional development and potentially facilitating permanent residency. Source: www.cicnews.com .
